Today I brought books to the detention center. They were all new teens. None of them wanted to take a book for fear of being made fun of.
“Spiderman,” I called out.
Blank stares.
“Batman,” I called out.
Blank stares.
“Has no one seen the movie?”
No one answered.
I grabbed the next book. “Polar bears?”
A short kid with an intense stare pointed to the kid next to him. “He loves polar bears. Give him the book.”
The kid next to him said, “No, no,” in the same way he would deny being a homosexual.
“C’mon, guys,” I said. “Everyone loves polar bears. They are killers. There’s a picture of a polar bear drenched in walrus blood.”
I could tell a few were interested but no one would admit it.
It wasn’t till I brought out the Guinness Book of World Records that they showed any enthusiasm.

Heee, that is a great story. Did it bring back memories of the state mental institution - or Edgefield? Or was it more that Edgefield completely prepared you for that moment?
